We get some nice turtles around from time to time, and it’s always nice to find baby turtles, since it usually means that there’s a mother turtle out there and possibly more siblings. We think this one is about a year old. There’s no amusing story with this guy, however: we almost stepped on him while doing some yardwork. We’re pretty sure he’s an Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina): as he gets older, his shell will get a lot taller and the spots will morph into more interesting patterns. I named him “Tibby” in honor of the most famous turtle of all.
You can see more pictures of Tibby if you want.

I want to see pictures of your yard and your house. Put them up on your website or send them to me. I’m so jealous that you have snakes and turtles. You’re so lucky! I have a box turtle living in my yard but she doesn’t have a cool name like Tibby.* No, she came to me named Yertle (which might be Jewish or perhaps just Seussish). Since Teresa found her in Clovis and named her, I don’t think I’m allowed to change her name.
*You should be aware that this is the name of one of the 4 main characters in “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” At least it’s the cool one!
