Weirdness of the Week

July 27, 2005, 8:26 pm

Short and sweet this week. Nothing mind-bendingly weird this time, but still some good oddities. And a very disturbing video.

Microchip saves rare Cambodian turtle from landing in Chinese soup pot: NPR had a story on the return of the turtle to Cambodia. It sounded like an old spy film, with the two parties meeting on [...]

Tivo Brain Transplant

July 20, 2005, 8:56 pm

My Tivo’s been having a bit of a problem lately: recorded material can tend to stutter when I’m playing it back, and it seems a lot slower than it used to be. It’s an older model: a Philips Series 1. The opportunities to transfer the lifetime service on it are few and far between [...]

Weirdness of the Week

July 14, 2005, 10:01 pm

Well, things started our weird this week, but then made a left turn into just silly. I got to browsing Lego related stuff for some reason and just couldn’t stop.

Really Weird Stuff

Not Bigfoot, just a guy in a shaggy outfit: If you see Bigfoot driving a car, IT’S NOT BIGFOOT.

War of the Worlds

July 11, 2005, 9:42 pm

Spoilers, ho!

Last night, I saw Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. And, truly, it should be called “Spielberg’s” because no one else could take an apocalyptic event and make it all about a guy reconciling with his kids. Unfortunately, it’s that famous Spielberg schmaltz that once again torpedoes the movie.

Firstly, the good. The special [...]

Woodland Creatures, Part 2: The Turtle

July 5, 2005, 6:01 am

We get some nice turtles around from time to time, and it’s always nice to find baby turtles, since it usually means that there’s a mother turtle out there and possibly more siblings. We think this one is about a year old. There’s no amusing story with this guy, however: we almost stepped on him [...]

Slingbox Redux

July 2, 2005, 1:46 pm

Ah, much much better. My previous Slingbox appeared to be deeply flawed: no sound, then no picture. However, after exchanging the unit and re-connecting it, all appears fine. This time, both the video and audio came up immediately and it all looks great!

With a working unit, the connection and setup was quite painless (though I [...]
